How Can you help your child prepare for PE?

Many studies show that children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day.  If your child lives a physically active lifestyle, s/he will be healthier and show more improvement in class.

The homework assignment for Physical Education is always the same.  Each child should get 60 minutes of physical activity every day. The 60 minutes can be broken down into shorter (10, 20, 30 minute) segments of time.  When they add up to 60 minutes that is good.  Although we don’t collect this work and grade it, your child will show faster improvement if they do this, and their grade will reflect it.

It is important for you to encourage your child to get plenty of vigorous exercise. Ask your child what we are doing in class, what skills are important to know and ask them to demonstrate those skills for you.  Ask them what they do well and what they need practice with.  If you can practice with them do it.  If you can’t help them, find someone who can.

Use an activity log to document the physical activities your child does every day.  I have provided a sample for you.

Emphasize the importance of fair play and good sportsmanship.  Demonstrate it as often as possible.  When watching others play, point out good and poor sportsmanship.  Compliment and encourage good sportsmanship.

Plan an activity you can do with your child.  It doesn’t have to be long or hard.  For example: Take a walk, play catch with a ball or Frisbee.  Take a bike ride or a walk. Try new things often.
